FromContinuum Shell Models towards Carbon Nanotubes

Dr. Chengyuan Wang

College of Engineering Swansea University

Singleton Park Swansea Wales UK SA2 8PP

Abstract: Discovery of carbon nanotubes has greatly accelerated the development of nanoscience and nanotechnology, and excited extensive research on their exceptional physical properties and distinct behaviour. Specifically the cost-effective elastic shell models play an indispensible role in studying the mechanical responses of carbon nanotubes, organizing relevant experimental and simulation data and capturing the majorfactors that determine the structural responses of carbon nanotubes. This presentation reviews the development of the nanosclae shell models and theirapplications in studying the nanomehcnaics of carbon nanotubes. Particular attention will be paid to the long-standing fundamental issues raised whenheading from continuum shell modes to discreet carbon nanotubes. The length of the presentation is approximately 90 minutes.
