I. General introduction of the discipline and the research fields
Civil Engineering is the general designation of the science and technology for the construction of various kinds of engineering facilities. It refers not only to the objects of engineering construction, namely all kinds of engineering facilities built under the ground, on the ground or in water, but also to the materials and equipment as well as the professional techniques among survey, design, construction, management, maintenance and repair, etc. Along with the development and evolution of human society, Civil Engineering is constantly being added new intensions, among which both the updating of materials and the development of Mechanics theory have played a great role in promoting its development. From ancient times human beings excavating to live and using wood to built bridge, to the modern high-rise buildings, bridge and tunnels, Civil Engineering has greatly improved the quality of our life and production, and plays an important part in the national economy and social development.
The Civil Engineering discipline of Jiangsu University has excellent teaching and research facilities. We have three undergraduate majors including Civil Engineering, Construction Environment and Equipment Engineering, Engineering Management. We have several relevant laboratories and institutes, which include one ministry-level key lab - Mechanical Structure Damage Detection & Assessment Laboratory, a Research Center of Jiangsu Province for Mechanical and Engineering Structural Damage Diagnosis and Management of Engineering Technology, an Experimental Mechanics Demonstration Center of Jiangsu Province, an Experimental Civil Engineering Cultivate Demonstration Center of Jiangsu Province, a Testing Technology Institute of Civil Engineering which offers technique services for society, Institute of Mechanics Engineering and Institute of Civil Engineering. There are 5 sub-labs in Civil Engineering Cultivate Demonstration Center experimental divisions, including structure, material, geotechnical, surveying and virtual simulation. On July of 2016, The Civil Engineering specialty in Jiangsu University obtained the accreditation of Civil Engineering by the National Board of CE Accreditation (NBCEA) in the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development (MoHURD) of China.
Civil Engineering discipline at Jiangsu university has increasingly influence in China with its own features. Now the Civil Engineering discipline has been qualified as the first-level discipline to confer master’s degree of Civil Engineering for domestic students.
